Cheney Reservoir is an ideal recreation area for all kinds of outdoor activity in the south-central Kansas area. The Bureau of Reclamation built Cheney Reservoir in 1964. Lying on the north fork of Ninnescah River and about six miles north of Cheney it’s approximately 24 miles to the west of Wichita Kansas. Providing water to the greater Wichita area and outdoor recreation for flood control. It supplies up to 70 percent of the Wichita water supply.

The sprawling lake offers up to 9537 acres of water and 67 miles of the shoreline with a multitude of family fun summertime activities. At its deepest point, it’s 49 feet and the normal pool is at 17 feet deep.

The entire 67 miles of the shoreline are for recreational use for the public. Ideal in the spring and the summer months. From September 15 to March 1 it’s a waterfowl conservation refuge. This includes all of the water and the shoreline and it’s all off-limits for humans during this time.

Jig fishing is quite popular and there is also regular fishing as well. With crappie, walleye, channel catfish, wipers, striped and white bass there is plenty of fish in this lake. The dam is an ideal hotspot in the latter weeks of March and early April for catching walleye. White bass spawn in May and the catfish are frequent visitors in June and July. Cheney lake has two easy to use fish cleaning stations and two fishing areas that are complete with the attractors and the fishing piers.

There’s something for everyone at Cheney Reservoir. With the surrounding 7412 acres of land, you can find plenty to do from hunting to wildlife watching and everything in between. Camping and hiking and picnicking are all favorite pastimes in this region. You can hunt pheasant, rabbit, quail, waterfowl, doves, turkeys, deer, and more. You’ll also see Raccoons, opossums, skunks, muskrats, red foxes, bobcats, beavers, and more in this region of the country.

From challenging hiking trails (there are two) you can see plenty. The Spring Creek trail is approximately 1/2 mile long and was awarded the Millennium Trail award by First Lady Hillary Clinton. The other trail is 1/8 of a mile and is called the Geiger Nature Trail. It’s an excellent choice for those who love nature and animals.

The Reservoir has many great conveniences such as modern toilets, outdoor grils, electrical hookup stations as well as 29 picnicking areas, and 400 primitive campsites as well.

There is also a shooting range located at the Parallel Road on the northwest end of the Wildlife preserve. This is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm. It’s open to the public. It’s closed on designated holidays if they fall on a weekend. All of the dates are clearly posted at the entrance.

All Law Enforcement officers are certified and operate the range when it’s open. There are shooting benches, target tracks, target backers, and all are provided at the 100 and 25-yard range. ADA accessible bench is also offered on the range and a unisex vault toilet. There is also hunting open seasonally.

The Cheney Reservoir park is also fully equipped with a shelter house as well as four-day use picnic areas. There are modern toilets and 10 of the restrooms boast showers. There are also 4 trailer dump stations. Many of the campsites also offer 20, 30, and 50 amp services.

There are also four designated swim areas for park visitors to cool off in during the summer months. Located 24 miles from the most developed city in Kansas, Wichita offers many great attractions. Old Town offers the best nightlife in the entire midwest to the Delano District, a historical area famous for shopping. The River Festival and more.
